Professor Steven Nelson’s Honors section of Art History 28, “Intro to African Art,” explored Omeka (a Content Management System) to better introduce students to the basic work of the art historian and the librarian. Each student worked with a collection of images from the UCLA Art History department’s Visual Resources Collection, and during the quarter cataloged those images and mounted a digital exhibition in Omeka. In the process, students learned how to think about the categories of art, how to use presentation software, and gained experience in visualizing and organizing an online exhibit. I trained the Professor, Teaching Assistants and students in how to use Omkea for art historical purposes. I consulted on best-practices for their field and helped translate their ideals into a digital medium. I also developed documentation of use by students and instructors in their teaching and project creation.
